Art School at The Sherman Foundation: The Subtraction Strategy

Being an artist is about making choices and sometimes it is about finding way to make new choices. Finding ways to trick yourself into coming up with new approaches, new choices. Finding ways to get past how you normally do things.

"The Subtraction Strategy" is one such method. You simply start with something pre existing and begin removing bits ad pieces until it becomes something else.

Here is an example. I wrote this poem by whiting-out the words in an automobile ad's copy.

operate our sensors in a solar sensor hat
measure the sun, help gather this sound, but run into large
and conveniently places arms.
sure, its the same old pleasant surprise.
