52 brand pileup on

It's hard to have sympathy for Detroit (my hometown) automakers when I see shit like this. If you go to there is a link to a feature called "Select a Vehicle". It takes you to a page that allows you to browse vehicles from all brands owned by Ford. Ford, Merury, Mazda, Volvo, Aston Martin, Land Rover, Jaguar... they're all there in one big troft. This is beyond stupid. I'm not going to bother explaining why. If you want to know read Positioning by Al Ries and Jack Trout (its only been in print for 25 years). Way to go, a few more sales at the expense of destroyed brand equity. The same kind of short-term thinking that destroyed a once great city.

Maybe Avenue A Razorfish, Ford Motor Company's interactive agency, is responsible.

UPDATE: I see today that NPR has a few stories on Ford.
Ford to Halt Production at 10 Plants
Marketplace Report: Ford to Make Huge Cuts

I wonder if and how this will be covered by their online documentary series Ford Bold Moves?

Jack Trout and the former CEO of Land Rover, Charlie Hughes recently talked by phone the woes of Ford and GMs diluted brands and misteps. They talked about where these guys went wrong and what they need to do to get back on track. You can hear the discussion at
