Art is the lie that reveals the truth. – Pablo Picasso

Dana Shuster was a celebrated Vietnam war-era military nurse who wrote poetry about her experiences. One of her poems was read by Vice President Al Gore when the Vietnam Women's Memorial was dedicated in 1993. But it turns out she was never a nurse, never in the military and never in Vietnam.
NPR Story

Dana Shuster isn't the only one with pant's on fire, according to the last census, 9 million people claim to have served in Vietnam when government records show that only 3 million did.

Always pays to check the original source before posting. Apparently a researcher provided Diantha Parker unintentionally - or intentionally - with incorrect information as to the 2000 US Census Report.

The question asked on the 2000 Census was "When did the person serve on active duty in the US Military" with one choice of response being "Vietnam Era(Aug 1964-April 1975). For those who do not understand "Era" the term means a time period, not where one served. There is absolutely no hint
within the Census report that 9 million Veterans "claimed" to have served IN Vietnam.

This is the stuff myths are made of !!!!!

I would have thought NPR would have done a better job fact checking.

Do you have a link that supports your clarification?

2000 US Census Military Veteran Statistics are at

http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/c2kbr-22.pdf

I also would have thought NPR would have done a better job of fact checking.

What has amazed me is that this small inaccurate statement made at the end of the NPR report has been the header on a number of blog postings rather than the original NPR title.

The actual question we should be considering is whether Shuster exceeded the parameters of ethical "poetic license".

Thanks for the info, sounds pretty interesting. By the way my grandpa prefers to spend his time looking for Viagra Online than looking for this amazing artist.
