One... bank?

Update. Dec 31. This screen-grabbed version has been on YouTube for a while. I wonder how they escaped the C&Ds?

Sorry Kids. U2's lawyers sent me threatening hate mail.

YouTube has got what you are looking for.

And here. Better quality.

Let's not ignore VISA. My observations on Visa's new "Life Takes Visa" Campaign: Paradox in Advertising.

Can't wait for the follow ups:

"Do they know it's investment time at all? (Bank the world)"(LiveAid for African banking)
and another U2 classic:
"PRIDE-in the name of banking"

AdFreak calls this "one of the best pieces of video ever recorded." I completely agree.

A friend of mine sent your link to a friend of his at Comedy Central. Is this worthy of prime time? I submit that it is.

As much as I want to say this is insane, a joke and as ridulous as ridulous could be, I worked there. And as "donviti" said, they eat this up. You can see the people forced to clap when the song was done. That kid should be ashamed of himself. He probably is studying for his black belt in six sigma already. Someone throw this up on YouTube asap.

Wow! Watching an ass-smooching banker deep-digging inside that hollow inner-self only to find his own creative void is deeply inspiring!

I know Hugh McColl would be proud of this trojan bravely forging the way to new 'higher' banking standards!
I especially like those two lone 'brothers' in the back of the audience who are trying to stay awake during the introduction.

Suagrfoot said...

Very interesting rendition of a great song. I tend to agree with the posters who suggest it's way too professional photography, with perhaps editing after who knows how many takes. Would a BofA meeting have that many camera angles? Did you notice the singer almost laughing a couple of times, and how that would be the time they panned over to the guitarist? I wouldn't be surprised if BofA wasn't even involved in this video. It will be interesting to see if they cop to it, if they were. My girlfriends betting the singer will be on Jay Leno before the weeks out. I thought it was funny, I'm not afraid of it, I don't think it signals the end of the world, and I'm not thinking of moving out of the USA because of it. However, I must admit I'll stick with my credit union as my bank of choice.

Anonymous said...

This is real. They took a a great song and made in part of their company. Give them credit and give BOFA credit for letting them do it. I work for a company that only does lame stuff because no one has any talent. They all do that we are the champion song, and man does that bite.

Anonymous said...

wow some of you people are retards. sadly it is true that corporate america really does this sort of thing on a regular basis. what is worse are the complete nincompoops who eat it up. the forever middle managers who think this is the greatest thing for the company. the only way it brings people together is that all of the forward thinking members of the audience get together and talk about how much they hate this crap. and of course make fun of all the monkeys who are bobbing their heads along and wishing it was them on the stage... and really hoping that their name will someday be added to a skit.

This is obviously a half-baked viral marketing stunt. Why else would it have been overproduced and put on YouTube? These companies don't understand how to leverage internet media properly. It's not just another place to stick lame commercials. Kind of a common problem with a lot of companies these days.

However... the first place I saw that Honda Element commercial with the crab that says "I pinch!" - that was a page on YouTube where a co-worker sent me. So... in fairness I guess this stuff does work. Hope they're tracking their conversions though.

Well, if they would work on their customer service a little more and on parody lyrics for their corporate shindigs a little less, I wouldn't always feel so freakin' pissed when I get off the phone with those clowns.

On a side note, that video made me scared and uncomfortable.

Anonymous said...

He left out that line about how even though AIDS is a real downer, credit cards make the world a better place.

Anonymous said...

Now do you all finally understand why I choose to be a Garbage Man!

Anonymous said...

OK. I work for Bank of America. The names, and titles given during the introduction are of real employees. (I verified them in the corporate directory.) Also everything else looks legit, including the logo on the podium and even the singer's name tag. He also references four key people within the company, each who are/were invoived with credit cards or the merger.

For those of you who think the camera work is too good to be real, I've seen similar professional-looking videos (not as freakin' funny, however) during other internal meetings; it's a large enough company and the merger with MBNA was such a big deal that it's quite possible there were multiple cameras going, AND someone did some editing on the back end.

Knowing how conservative the company is as well, they are likely soiling there tighy-whiteys right now knowing this made its way outside the company.

(Since this was made internally, not for profit, and had NO intention of being seen outside the company, there's almost NO WAY U2 has any standing to sue for copyright infringement.)

I can pretty much guarantee the two guys (and whomever leaked it) will likely get more NEGATIVE flack because of this.

Not all of us drink the company Kool-Aid; some of us just sit in the back of the room, watching the clock, and wishing we were somewhere else, like actually getting our work done.

But, honestly, sitting through this and trying not to bust up laughing would probably have been the highlight of my day if I were important enough to be at this particular meeting.

All big companies do dumb "rah rah" stuff like this, not just banks. But 99% is kept behind closed doors. If you asked people who work for other Fortune 500 companies, they likely have to sit through similar crap.

Anonymous said...

For those of you who think it's a joke and point to the camera angles, it's not... I worked there for ages and BofA routinely records and broadcasts its big meetings as a way of saving on travel expenses - videoconferencing is the way its done and everything gets taped. This definitely has BofA stamped all over it, spirit points and all. He's a real "team player".

This one slayed me, in a "damn I'm so glad I don't work there any more" sort of way.

He's definitely right. ALL big companies do professional video of their big meetings, especially one as big as a merger kickoff. Got to have something to put in the company archives as well as massage the honchos egos. I've seen enough of these videos in the tech industry to fill three lifetimes....

At least it looks like this guy was having fun. I'd think working in a conservative bank environment doesn't allow much time for cultural or aesthetic musings on the appropriateness of combining a song about the human condition with a bank merger. I'd imagine this guy is a huge fan, has seen concerts & is truly passionate about U2's music and the music makes him feel good about and believe in what he is doing with his own life. Don't we all use music to make our lives feel worth living? Otherwise it's "OH MY GOD I MIGHT AS WELL SHOOT MYSELF RIGHT NOW." . . . Having said that, I would think the Bank of America/MBNA merger is essentially evil and bad for humanity.

Anonymous said...

cool, I love watching all these folks throw their two cents of meaningless bs. I would bet all of them would be the first ones to join in and sing along if they were at that meeting or if they had a job. Get over it. Let's talk about ending war not two guys singing a song about where they work. Peace now!!!

Anonymous said...

Hey Dave Werner, you are kidding, what it god's are you trying to prove? You need to get a job and a life. Maybe the guys at BofA can help. They seem like nice people

Anonymous said...

The only way this could *possibly* be cool is if the guys intentionally did the song just to see the audience pretend it was good. But sadly, I think we all know that the Kool-Aid pitcher is empty, and they've got purple tongues. Otherwise, they would have done it to the tune of Captain & Tennille's "Muscrat Love."

That was the most cringe-worthy thing I've seen in ages. It was like a perfect storm of Horror and Comedy.

What a bunch of tools, the lot of 'em. I'm so glad I didn't use my MBA to go into finance. PUKE!

P.S. Bono should punch that bitch in the throat.
