The Mighty Boosh, Season 3!!!

Great news, it appears that cameras are rolling on season 3 of the BBC series The Might Boosh.

Season 3. Episode 1

FROM SEASON 2: This may be the best 7 minutes of tv ever filmed. I never tire of watching this and neither should you.

A Lesson In Mathematics

OK. Here are a few amusing excerpts from soemthing a coworker fwd'd to me.

Smart man + smart woman = romance

Smart man + dumb woman = affair

Dumb man + smart woman = marriage

Dumb man + dumb woman = pregnancy

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband.

A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend.

A successful woman is one who can find such a man.

Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night.

A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't.

A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, and she does.

Foie Gras, Chicago's Ban

Among foodies, Chicago's year old ban on Foie Gras has generated a lot of discussion. The reaity of the situation is that many restaurants (Duckeasies) are still serving it and no fines have been issued for violating the ban.

NPR story: Chicago Restaurants Duck a Foie Gras Ban

Note: My goal was to eat Foe Gras at least once a week for the Foie Gras Survey I started. I think it's been two weeks since I've indulged. This weekend, I promise.

Pocket Shots

Pocket Shots. Palm-sized, rip-n-run plastic pouch containing your libation of choice (gin, rum, vodka, whiskey, or tequila). The quaint flask of generations past has finaly gone disposable. I have a feelng that consumer patterns of consumption and social moral climate are at cross purposes on this one.

Hollywood's version of reality

Ever notice how dogs on TV and in movies are always making a whining noise that dogs never really make.

Here's an example from Mad Men. The couple are on the roof of a building, the dogs in this scene are in a fenced kennel to the right.

Stylistic Distortions

I find it fascinating to watch a particular stylistic detail be pushed and pushed to the point of absurdity. A good example in fashon would be how far "bagginess" was taken with jeans in urban fashion. One that I've been watching for a while now is the cuff on jeans. The below example isn't so bad. I've seen sillier examples.

On some level it becomes a stylistic arms race, a constant escalation of how far participants are willing to push it.

How long before they touch the knee?

William Gibson

Packed the house last night at the Union Square Barnes and Noble. The Q&A was a bit short but it was still cool to hear him read.

Buttplug Park

Last winter, when I first posted about Buttplug Park (on Manhattans west side) I had no idea that they sparyed water out the top.

A real buttplug:

The Dark Side of Giuliani

The Dark Side fo Giuliani is begining described more and more often in the press.

Roling Stone Article: Giuliani: Worse Than Bush

There is also an indepth piece in theis week's Harpers. (I don't think this is available online.)

Chunky Pam

This is off the chain. I've been sharing this with friends for weeks, don't know why I haven't posted this yet. Watch to the very end, there is a fantastic homage to the Sopranos.

The 70s obsession with the American Indian

A now overlooked part of the 70s is the obsession with the narrative and aesthetic of the American Indian. A few examples:

Sacheen Littlefeather Refuses Brando's Oscar (March 27, 1973)

Today in Odd History, a young woman in beaded doeskin took the stage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, in Los Angeles, California, to decline Marlon Brando's Best Actor Oscar for The Godfather. Her name, she said, was Sacheen Littlefeather, and she had a message from Marlon Brando.

"Marlon Brando ... has asked me to tell you, in a very long speech which I cannot share with you presently — because of time — but I will be glad to share with the press afterward, that he must... very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reason for this being... are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry… excuse me… and on television in movie re-runs, and also the recent happenings at Wounded Knee. I beg at this time that I have not intruded upon this evening and that we will, in the future… our hearts and our understanding will meet with love and generosity. Thank you on behalf of Marlon Brando."

Im sure there are all sorts of gems out there. Any suggestions of additions would be greatly appreciated.

Continuing with the fire theme...

Sunshine, Director Danny Boyle's latest film is outstanding. It didn't get a very wide release but don't let that keep you from seeing it. I highly recommend seeing it on the big screen.

The soundtrack is amazing as well, a collaboration between Danny Boyle and the band underworld. Very disappointing to hear that there are no plans to release the soundtrack as of yet.

Foie Gras Survey: Les Halles

Last night I had diner at Les Halles.

The Foie Gras there is sauteed with apple, walnuts and Calvados sauce.
The size of the Foie Gras there is larger than most places, very succulent, very fatty. Delicious.
I give it an 8.
